How We Do It
Our approach to point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is very practical. In addition to monthly interpretation and didactic sessions, we have bi-weekly ultrasound rounds. Our fellows are also encouraged to use POCUS on new consults and to help in decision-making.
Simulation
Our fellows first train on the Simbionix U/S Mentor ultrasound simulator. This allows our fellows to improve their US hand-eye coordination and work on basic ultrasound techniques such as fanning, rocking, and sliding. These modules must be completed before moving up to participating in ultrasound rounds.
- Basic Hand-Eye Coordination
- Advanced Hand-Eye Coordination
- Knobology
- Abdominal Ultrasound Module 1
Didactics
We have several introductory lectures to introduce the basic mechanism behind ultrasound technology.
Lecture 1: Introduction/Fundamentals of POC Ultrasound
Lecture 2: Interpreting Renal Ultrasounds
Lecture 3: Lung Ultrasound
Lecture 4: POC US for volume assessment
Weekly Ultrasound Quizzes
Every other week we email out renal ultrasounds for interpretation. We track fellow and faculty progress as compared to readings from our radiologist.

Ultrasound Rounds
Monthly we have ultrasound rounds with our fellows and a faculty member. During these rounds, we work on techniques and hand-eye coordination.
